YRE-001 delivers an irrepressibly funky set of old-school Techno tracks by Todd Sines under the .xtrak guise. The Chicago-styled cuts resurrect the '95 vibe of the material Sines produced for and with DBX (Daniel Bell) on 7TH City and Peacefrog, as well as on Carl Craig's Planet E. "Back_Up EP" presents four slamming samplings of techno-funk where acidy synths burble and ricochet over sexily slithering bass lines, backbeat hi-hats, stomping kick drums, and snares that crack and pop as forcefully as a slap to the face. On this first YORE release, Sines invigorates the globally-celebrated minimal techno genre with classic soulfulness and depth.

FRANKIE REC 017
TODD SINES

A new release on the Parisian label Frankie is out on 15 January 2007, the first release from Todd Sines in 4 years. Featuring vocalist Natacha Labelle, it's a collision of house, techno, funk and more... underwater pads + organs, throat-like noises and breathy, seductive vocals from Ms. Labelle.

Track excerpts:

A1 rive gauche
A2 in_come
B1 thick satin
B2 elastic

The first release from Todd Sines in 4 years. Featuring vocalist Natacha Labelle, it’s a collision of house, techno, funk and more… underwater pads + organs, throat-like noises and breathy, seductive vocals from Ms. Labelle. Todd Sines comments: “Painstakingly crafted over the course of 4 years, these tracks were individually recorded in 4 different studios in Toronto and New York, with a variety of obstacles to overcome. The transition from Mac OS9 to OSX, Logic to Live, Mac to PC, PC to Mac, Live to Logic, 48.1 to 320 kps MP3 to 44.1khz, analogue to digital, digital to analogue; not to mention 4 major relationships, a few flings, a few intercontinental flights and 6 different apartments. This EP is a testament to the hardships Mr. Sines and his loyal cats have endured over the last 4 years. Thankfully, we have the internet and MySpace.”

reviews / press

Stylus Magazine [Todd Hutlock]
Todd Sines Broad Band EP / Frankie Rec / FRANKIE REC 17
Todd Sines has released records on Carl Craig’s Planet E and Dan Bell’s 7th City imprints among others, so you know he’s learned from the best. But after five years in hibernation, will Sines still remember those lessons? The answer is yes, and the four-track Broad Band EP shows that the time off hasn’t dried up his creative well.

Opener “Rive Gauche” actually sounds a bit like a hybrid of Craig and Bell, with the former’s layered percussion and analog synth buzzes and the latter’s clipped sounds and choppy rhythms, as well as some vocal snippets from who I assume is Sines’ longtime partner in crime Natacha Labelle. Elsewhere, Sines strips down the percussion and makes with some seriously twisted organ riffage on “In_Come,” and comes over a bit Akufen-like on “Elastic.” A well-rounded and diverse return to form, then. I would think that if Sines could ever get a full-length together, it would be a glorious thing indeed.

Philip Sherburne earplug.com,: “the todd sines record is really good... a bit darker than usual for your label! really like both A-side cuts a lot”

TODD SINES - BROAD_BAND EP
Frankie 12"
 THE WIRE (UK) Philip Sherburne:
It's been a while since I've heard anything new from Todd Sines, and he surprises here, diverging both from the relatively and worthily "deep"/"soulful" sound he presented on records for Residual and Planet E, but also diverging from the skippy and relatively upbeat house of virtually every Frankie release so far. This turns out to be a good thing: "Rive Gauche" echoes the aliasing of Radio Slave's "My Bleep" and the spooky séance techniques of Dinky's recent material, pairing it with a dryly funky bass line. With layer upon layer of whir and vocal coos, the whole thing has the effect of an underwater attempt at a disk defrag, the kind of web-fingered kluge of which Drexciyans might approve. With their resonant organs and yearning voices, "In Come" and "Thick Satin" are a little more like the Sines we know, but they're still marked with a powdery dryness that sets them apart. "Elastic" rounds out the EP with a lumbering, almost Schaffel rhythm that's circled by hungry organs and go-nowhere vocal snippets, every bar a funhouse reflection of the one before.

Todd Sines - Broad_Band - (Frankie 017/ WordAndSound)
Todd Sines had to master a couple personal and music-technological obstacles until he finally succeeded in recording this prolific EP - his first release since his record on Planet E in 2002. These dark, demanding tracks are housy in an elementary way, they have an oldschool casualness - but in the same time their production is completely up to date. The bass line of "Rive Gauche" which sounds like an interference is particularly intriguing. A very special twist is is achieved by the spoken, french vocals of Natacha Labelle. These tracks are among the most beautiful house tunes which are available today.

RESIDENT ADVISOR: Mohson Iqbal
Todd Sines is back after four years, this time on Frankie Rec, the French label that has been released a steady stream of forward thinking dancefloor ideas since 2004. Four years have passed since Todd’s last release, but his return is stamped with the same eloquent deep mood and real funk.

‘Rive Gauche’ arrives gnarly and jackin’ with trucker cap samples and seedy stabs that’ll suit DJs on the French underground, while ‘In_come’ is a little deeper and less crunked up with low pads and a cute girl groove – one for the deep house soldiers wearing K-Swiss. On the flip, ‘Thick Satin’ delivers naughty vocals and a deviant sample, while ‘Elastic’ with comes in a little softer with a different outlook, vocals colliding around soft tippy-toe keys and exclusive percussive elements.

Todd is a very well accomplished producer who knows how to arrange, and ‘Broad_Band’ is a welcome return. Natacha Labelle’s vocal snippets especially give the house / techno / retro / ghetto tech proceedings a moody and raunchy edge, and while it might have taken time for Todd to come up with this quality, it’s a comeback that raises the bar. Rating 8/10 http://www.residentadvisor.net/review_view.asp?ID=4223

DJ MAG (UK) Giles Smith: “Much more like it! Here's forthcoming review from DJ:
TODD SINES - BROAD BAND (Frankie) 4.5* Super slick ep from Mr Sines which fits very nicely into the labels sound which always manages to combine, deep, jackin and minimal influences. "Rive Gauche" is totally off the wall with its fat beats, darn right weird synth stabs and cut n paste groove . "in_come" is probably my favourite here with its lo-fi, yet tight, crisp groove, slick heads down drum programming and Moodyman-esque bassline. "Thick Satin" a recent favourite of Magda and Troy Pierce's is surprisingly the most groovy and accessible here with its warm breathy female vocal and bumpin feel. Last up "Elastic" is probably the most experimental here with its dub inspired drums, deep chords and crazy production tricks.”

Claude VonStroke (Dirtybird records)
: “yeah man so weird ...the A1 Rive Gauche is for my afterhours sets. Thanks!”

Damian Lazarus (Crosstown Rebels: “killer ep, thanks for sending it. i actually heard it a couple weeks back whilst pilfering through troy pierce's laptop, i almost stole it and im pleased i didn't as it was on my desk when in arrived home. so i got the tune and didnt have to feel guilty about it. excellent - especially thick satin... but all killer!! ”

Damien Almira (Coda Mag FR): “Todd Sines is one of my heroes, I enjoyed playing this track at my DJ residence @ Rex Club! ”

Derek Plaslaiko (Spectral Rec) : “Very Frankie, and un-Frankie at the same time. More organic than I was expecting, but something I think I will carry with me a long time, and can't wait to have on vinyl!!!... Thick Satin one of my faves from that cd, and what you've done with this version is blow it out of the FUCKING WATER!!! This is my gem from this EP.”

DJ T: “The A2-Track does it for me!”

Fabrice Lig (f com): “Rive gauche & Thick Satin excellent tracks!...manages to do tracks between House and super funky techno ...perfect for every kind of dj set...will play it tonight!”

Geoffroy Mugwump: “killer jacking weirdo trax...totally up mein strasse.”

Ivan Smagghe: “love it”

Jesse Rose (Front Room Rec): “nice release. cheers. jesse.” + “DOPE! Need the vinyl asap!”

John Tejada:: “Yes I know Todd, he's a niiace! High five!! full support!!!!! Blowing up dancefloors in your pants!!!!!... really interesting sound design on the record while keeping a good groove... i do think it's a good record and a nice bit of fresh air to all the overflow out there ”

Karotte: “thick satin ist ein brett. dezember charts NO.3”

Mike Shannon (Cynosure, Revolver: “Nice work from Mr.Sines. Frankie keeps Jack alive! ”

Alexander Robotnick - Ciucci Kola Remixes (Scatalogics record/005)

Only times the two TRACKS "Ciucci Kola" and "I Remember Kamchaka", which sound completely beautifully angestaubt nevertheless to somehow teach but (finally is from the early 80ern) skurril enough the some Frenchman from today being afraid. Substantial one up-transmitted comes then the Todd Sines Remix, which up-loads itself as much stringer that he falls down nearly and the Selway MEMORY box mix kramt the oldest Drummachine raus, which he can find. Ulysses plans then the Kamchaka TRACK, and a genuinly disturbed plate comes out for people, which love it gladly full diagonal harmony around itself.

AUTHOR: HYS
Skillful maneuver of the NYer Scatalogics label: "Ciucci Kola" and "I Remember Kamchaka" are productions from Robotnicks of most important phase, which developed directly before "Problèmes D'Amour", so far only on the "rare Robotnick's" CD to be had were and for the first time on Vinyl are present here. The present Floorentwicklung makes "Ciucci Kola" with its!!! compatible Chant character the current favorite, which is then promoted also in the Todd Sines Remix to the hit of the plate, but the deepe "I Remember Kamchaka" remains one of the best TRACKS by Robotnick more ever.

MOTOR SOUL VOL. 1 - PHILPOT RECORDS

NIK REIFF
THE JETSET

It's called MOTOR SOUL vol. 1 and it's a series of 12's from an upcoming CD released by Detroit-minded folks from around the world.. from NYC / MONTREAL to POLAND. Featuring cuts by Nik Reiff, The JetSet, yours truly [with some cut up vocals from Natacha Labelle].. it's getting a lot of great reviews and play, from Charles Webster [Miso, Peacefrog] to Dimbiman [Perlon].

You can hear my track here.

here are some of the initial site reviews!
BOOMKAT
Not sure who's behind this label but they seem to be on the detroit tip which is kool with me. What's best is the return of Planet E's Todd and Natacha who I've been awaiting new material from since the genius 'Overlap' 12" on the E' back at the tailend of 2002. Their track on display here is 'Naa' (though you'll be humming "damn yeah") / it's a killer clatterthwack groovin' house track that's that extra bit slinky and sexy. Plus it grooves away for a whole side, funk pumpin' and Natacha's vocals get to you just like Dani Siciliano at her most spellbinding. The b-siders are unknown to me but no minds, Nik Reiff's 'Brzydotta' drop's a highly crisp but heavy rolling techno track with buzzing bass, minimal sonics and barmy vocals while The Jetset's 'Machinepark' is a bit poo but 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Buy for Todd and Nat.

COVERT RECORDS
Todd Sines + Natacha Labelle of planet e-fame kickstart this release and drop some far out beats and vocals; definitely the next step in tech-house. Nik Reiff Feat. Philip Kucharski - Brzydota uses some polska-lyrics to twist your minds...we love it.

GROOVE DISTRIBUTION
Exclusive vinyl-only tracks for a new comp from hot German label, PHILPOT. Featuring some real heavyhitters, with the a-side seeing TODD SINES and NATACHA LABELLE (PLANET E) dropping some next-level Detroit house, the b-side features two unmissably dope deep techy bombs. DOPE!
